Friday 1 Poke (Jubilee Edition) @ No 28. Bar, 27-29 Nelson Street. 10pm-3am. Free.

“Okay. It’s the Diamond Jubilee weekend. The folk at Queenie HQ have been good enough to grant us an extra two days to do with what we please – whether that be hanging up the bunting and singing ‘Rule Britannia’ from the rooftops or sneering at the Beeb’s sycophantic coverage and playing ‘The Queen Is Dead’ on repeat – so why not kickstart this Bank Holiday bonanza with a few hours’ dancing courtesy of POKE?

We’ll be playing the usual assortment of indie, hip hop, punk, electronica, riot grrl, leftfield pop and Boney M (if you’re lucky) at No. 28 in Newcastle city centre (formerly The Red Rooms) on Friday June 1st. It’s completely free to get in (unlike most other places over the weekend!) and we’re on right through until 3 in the morning.

And yes, we’ll play ‘God Save The Queen’. The GOOD one. So get yourselves down!”

Saturday 2 The Walk of No Shame: Slutwalk Newcastle 2012 meeting at the Centre for Life at 12:30pm

“Following on from last years very successful round SlutWalks, cities here in the UK and around the world are planning for the next even bigger and better round of marches. !!This year’s march will be starting from Centre for Life to allow for a better and more visible route!!

Over the past year in the UK we have saw only the beginning of the attacks on our rights, for example Ken Clark’s insensitive comments over ‘different types of rape’, Nadine Dorries’s Abstainence Bill for Girls and “20 reasons for 20 weeks”, and government spending cuts impacting on funds for women’s refuge shelters, support services, the rocketing price of childcare and cuts to street lighting. We are here to say enough is ENOUGH!

Our aim is to change the way victims of sexual violence are treated and perceived, and to reclaim the word slut as a positive and empowering term. The SlutWalk movement began last year in Toronto in response to comments made by police officer Michael Sanguinetti, claiming that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.” a comment which has inspired action across the world to end the culture of blaming the victim and victims blaming themselves.”

R. STEVIE MOORE (NASHIVILLE / USA): The Godfather of home recording returns to Geordie shores! Following on from his much loved Newcastle debut at the Star And Shadow last August, R. STEVIE MOORE returns to the UK and Europe to twist again, with his band TROPICAL OOZE in tow and with the release of a brand-spanking-new double album, recorded with long term friend and disciple ARIEL PINK.

Born in 1952 to famed ELVIS + ROY ORBISON Bass player BOB MOORE, since 1966 – R. STEVIE has recorded nearly 2,000 songs on over 400 very original homemade albums of alarmingly idiosyncratic variety and styles and is often considered a seminal pioneer in the DIY & home recordists ethic.

He has worked on numerous collaborations with a variety of musicians and artists including David Shrigley, MGMT, Jad Fair, Mike Watt + David Gregory from XTC; as well as recently recording a 7″ single for Charlatans singer Tim Burgess’ new label.

Remaining virtually unknown until recent years, he quietly resided in New Jersey as curator of his own museum, until now! R. STEVIE MOORE – back in Tennessee, loudly shouting and ready to charm Europe once again!

Saturday 16 Bunga Bunga Summer Nights @ Star & Shadow Cinema, 8:30pm – 2am, £5

“Cocktails. Ping pong. Skittles. Musics. Table football. Last hurrah.

It’s Bunga Bunga’s third time plucky. It’s in praise of summer and it’ll be the last in the series of Bunga Bunga nights to raise money for the Newcastle University MFA summer show.

We aren’t reinventing anything. Just party party party, sweat sweat sweat.

And, amongst others, NWAVI (Peter J Evans) will be on the wax spins! Which is good because he is souper. Cf Endless Race a coupla weeks back where he played the house down.

Also, Ladies of Midnight Blue have kindly agreed to play and they are always fierce.

Fiver in for a good cause. Depending on your feelings about art.”

Hex On The Beach (Melbourne, Australia)

Bryony Beynon says… “A very special set by this glittery gloomth coven of three women based in Melbourne, Australia, including ex-pat Maya-Victoria Kjellstrand, who burst ear drums across Britain in the mid-2000s masterminding previously creep time all-girl noise-based projects like Leopard Leg, Creeper and Fright, Polly Shang Kuan Band and Back Stabbath. The focus in HOTB is still on that blend of haunting deconstructed punk, but this time crafted from the mysteriously spellbinding spot where the tropical and the occult collide.”

Thursday 28 LOUDER NOW! Privilege (dir. Yvonne Rainer) @ Star & Shadow, 7pm, Free (with £1 membership)

“Rainer’s 6th feature is a genuinely subversive movie about menopause. Out of a subject that has been denied on film by virtually everybody, Rainer has fashioned a witty, risky work about sexual identity and the unequal economies of race, gender and class.

Guest speakers: Dr Rosie White (Northumbria University) and Dr Cate Degnen (Newcastle University). Dr White’s research interests focus on the representation of active female protagonists in popular culture. Dr Degnen researches experiences of ageing and of social change; the ageing self, narrativity and temporality.

LOUDER NOW! is brought to the Star and Shadow with support from The Gender Research Group at Newcastle University.”
