Thursday 12 BRIGITTE APHRODITE, MUSH & LIBERTY HODES @ Cumberland Arms £6. 7:30pm
If you were lucky enough to see Josie Long at the Star & Shadow last month, you’ll have been wowed by BRIGITTE APHRODITE, a support act with the charisma and talent to be able to fill halls and telly screens in her own right.
We’ve brought Brigitte to the Cumberland, where she’ll headline, supported by the legendary MUSH, and LIBERTY HODES, a comedy starlet described as “the lovechild of Emo Phillips and Isy Sutie”.
BRIGITTE APHRODITE is a cockney-voiced singer-songwriter who performs comedy pop songs, sometimes with a backing band. She straddles both worlds – she was shortlisted for the 2009 Musical Comedy awards, and has just released her first single, I Dream Myself Awake b/w Miss Hedonistic, on Kate Nash’s 10p label.
MUSH Haiing from Heaton, but hailed wherever songwriting is laude, Mush sew together cabaresque piano, mournful delicate guitar with beautiful yet fragile vocal melodies underpinned with strong menacing basslines. Writer Nicky Rushton’s vivid and beguiling live performance is offset by Sarah’s irreverent humor.
LIBERTY HODES A young lady clad in silly dresses with a penchant for Professor Brian Cox and a love of all things surreal.
With the help of (often badly) photoshopped images and her trusty ukulele, Liberty aims to expose her innermost thoughts via comedy and song, engaging the audience through the wacky mind of a slightly awkward girl. She has been on the circuit for about half a year, and awkwardly continues to merge comedy with art and music.

Friday 20 FILM + GIG: ALL DIVIDED SELVES + LUKE FOWLER/RICHARD YOUNGS IMPROVISED SET @ Star and Shadow, £6.50, 7:30PM

Luke Fowler’s latest film comes to Star and Shadow. Continuing his investigation into charismatic iconoclast R. D. Laing, the film concentrates on archival representations of Laing and his colleagues as they struggled to acknowledge the importance of considering social environment and disturbed interaction in institutions as significant factors in the aetiology of human distress and suffering. All Divided Selves reprises the vacillating responses to these radical views and the less forgiving responses to Laing’s latter career shift; from eminent psychiatrist to enterprising celebrity. A dense, engaging and lyrical collage from Derek Jarman Award winner Luke Fowler.

The screening is followed by an improvised set from Fowler and the great Richard Youngs. Youngs, who started his No Fans Records in 1990 but is also put out by jagjaguwar, collaborates widely counting Jandek, Brian Lavelle and Neil Campbell amongst his co-creators. Youngs, who hasn’t played in Newcastle for quite some time, makes his first appearance at Star and Shadow. Needless to say, we are very much looking forward to this event.

Thursday 26 LOUDER NOW! “DON’T NEED YOU” (2006) Directed by: K Koch @ Star & Shadow. 7:30PM
Part of the Louder Now! Feminism On Film season 7:30 p.m. free (although £1 membership to the Star and Shadow is required).
“don’t need you” is a documentary film that tells the story of the origins of Riot Grrrl in the American independent music scene of the 1990s, and how this feminist movement evolved into a revolutionary underground network of education and self-awareness through music, writing, activism, and women-friendly community.

Friday 27 PUSSY RIOT BENEFIT GIG: NO FIT STATE, EXECUTIVE LEGS & WOMEN IN REVOLT @ Star & Shadow £4, 7:30PM
Arrested after a performance in Red Square, a protest against the regime of Vladimir Putin, three members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot, have been remanded in jail, facing up to 7 years criminal punishment for participating in a public demonstration for human right…s and against oppression under Putin.

Illustrating the gross level of human rights violations in Russia the detained activists now need the support of the world’s punk community.

With that in mind, three queer punk bands from the North East, No Fit State, Women in Revolt and Executive Legs are playing a benefit at the Star & Shadow on April 27, with all proceeds going to the Pussy Riot defence fund .

NO FIT STATE Screaming fertile energetic Anarcho-feminist banshees, No Fit State are where the Raincoats meet Crass, with violin, cornet and rapping added to a bass and drum based mix. Recently recorded for the No Borders compilation, they’ve recently been described as “the best punk band in years”.

EXECUTIVE LEGS Sounding like “being sick at a funfair”, Executive Legs aim to make music for dancing that is both joyful but tinged with menace. Being in a band is also a good excuse for them to wear ridiculous brightly coloured outfits. This is rubberised glam for the sussed masses.

WOMEN IN REVOLT Women in Revolt are raw, untutored garage rock from three drag queens (two born female) and two drag kings (one born female). Influenced by Jane Solanas, Johnny Thunders and Patti Smith, they play songs born of the Chelsea Hotel, Berlin and Soho. Fluent in Polari, they are the bastard daughters of Jayne County and Richard Hell, and collect cheap wigs, make-up and guitars.
